A Slight Delay
Thursday, 15 January 2009

Everyone reading this is no doubt aware of the economic turmoil that the world has generally plunged into.

Although Alberta and Edmonton in particular has been quite fortunate so far, the EGCC has decided to delay launch of a new convention by one year to 2010. As this convention relies on funding from both private and public sources, the Board members felt that delaying the event for one year will allow us to ensure planning is secure despite the current economic reality. We do not want to be a financial burden on private partners who may be falling on harder times nor do we want to be at the mercy of fickle public funding changes.

We are disappointed that our original target date will not be met, but are confident that this decision will allow us to create a solid foundation for years of gaming conventions in the future. As always, we continue to look for individuals to help in numerous positions, both on the Executive and other roles.

Back From PAX and Vacations
Sunday, 07 September 2008

Several of the Board members attended this year's PAX and have come back renewed and ready to tackle Canada's own game convention head on. We talked with a lot of people, made a lot of contacts, and even ran into some Edmontonians in the seats of various panels.

A small setback occurred when the Federal Government decided to cancel the Canada New Media Fund, a fund operated by Telefilm Canada which has helped start Montreal's Festival Arcadia as well as run the Great Canadian Video Game Competition. Unfortunately the Conservative Government decided it would join in on the chopping block fun along with numerous arts and cultural grants. Telefilm found out about this two days before we had a conference call with the Vancouver office and the news broke in the Globe and Mail a week later. The bright side is that Telefilm loved our idea and wants us to keep in touch in case new funding sources are announced. We're crossing our fingers!

Big news aside, there are a few website changes are on the way, including bios for the Board members, blog pages, and updates to the Event section to let you, the reader, know just what it is we're planning. Websites are all about content, and we want to make this a content rich site. Step by step!

Taking place in the second quarter of 2010 in Alberta's Capital City, the Edmonton Game Convention is poised to become Canada's premiere consumer oriented game convention.

The EGC will bring together gamers of all ages and kinds -- young and old, hard-core and casual -- in a welcoming environment where all attendees are free to spend a weekend playing games and engaging in opportunities for dialogue about the world of games.

While this could be seen as just another game convention, we are truly different. As a non-profit society, all attendees become members of the organization and can have a say in how things are being done. This is a truly consumer oriented convention -- the only one in Canada that can say it is indeed organized for gamers by gamers.

Please visit the Event section of our website for an overview of the individual components of the EGC that promise to make it an exciting and enjoyable weekend.

The convention is organized and operated by the volunteer-run Edmonton Game Convention Committee, a completely not-for-profit registered Society. For more information about the EGCC, its organizational structure, and operating guidelines please see the Governance section of the website.
